1983 Pioneer Dairy Leadership Award

Walter Edwin Wittorff (1929-1982), Ava, Missouri

Walter Edwin Wittorff was a prominent Brown Swiss Cattle breeder at Ava, Missouri. He was born at Passaic, New Jersey. When he was 14 years old the family moved to Illinois where Walter worked on a dairy farm during the summers. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1952 with a major in animal husbandry. He was in military service during the Korean conflict.

Mr. Wittorff and his wife established a Brown Swiss herd and farmed at Davis, Illinois until 1974 when they moved to Ava, Missouri, bringing the herd with them. Their herd is known under the Wittspride prefix.

Mr. Wittorff was a member of the National Brown Swiss Association, the Missouri Brown Swiss Association, and the Dairy Shrine. He was a Director of the Missouri Brown-Swiss Association. He was member of Nabor House Fraternity. He had served on the local DHIA Board and Fair Board of Douglas County, Missouri and was a 4-H leader. He served as AMPI delegate this past year. He was also co-founder of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ava.

The family exhibits the Wittspride herd in county and regional shows in Missouri and Arkansas.

Mr. Wittorff is survived by his wife, two sons, Walter Jr. and Edward, and one daughter, Dorothy.

The herd is now operated by Walter, Jr. with the help of Edward.
