Hubert Bloss

Hubert Burton Bloss was born Nov. 26, 1918, at Pawnee City, Neb., and graduated from the local high school in 1937. He married Doris Hunzeker in Pawnee City in 1945.

Hubert grew up on the family registered Jersey dairy farm in Nebraska. He moved his registered Jersey operation to a 320-acre farm near Sarcoxie in Jasper County in 1947. The Bloss family milked 80 Jerseys and maintained a herd average of 10,500 pounds of milk with 500 pounds of fat. The farming operation also included raising corn, alfalfa, and brome hay.

Hubert’s goal was to breed sound, productive cows that were strong in type. He was also an active supporter and participant in state and local Jersey activities such as fairs, picnics, and other events.

Hubert and Doris had two children. Son Richard, along with his wife Anita, continues to operate the family dairy operation – now at 120 registered Jersey cows with a DHIA herd average of 14,000 pounds of milk. Daughter Bonnie Grace is a bank cashier at Sarcoxie.

There are also four grandchildren, the sons and daughter of Richard and Anita. Mike is a graduate of the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. He and his wife Kirsten, also a graduate of the MU College of Veterinary Medicine, operate the Countryside Animal Clinic at Aurora; Jeff, another grandson, continues to help his father Richard in the dairy operation and also has his own hog and crop farm; Jennifer is a first year agricultural education major at MU; and Kristin is a high school freshman.  There are also six great grandchildren.

The Bloss family has an outstanding FFA record. Hubert was a member of the Pawnee City FFA livestock judging team that placed second at the American Royal in 1936. Son Richard was a Star State Farmer in 1965 and an American Farmer in 1966; grandsons Michael and Jeff were American Farmers in 1987 and 1989 respectively; and granddaughter Jennifer was Star State Farmer in 2000.

Hubert was a member of the Missouri Jersey Cattle Club and was an officer of the MJCC #1 Parish and a DHIA member. In addition he was a member of the LaRussell school board; the LaRussell Special Road District; First Baptist Church of Sarcoxie; Jasper County Planning and Zoning Committee; and the Jasper County Republican Committee.

After milking Jersey cows for 35 years in Missouri, Hubert retired in in 1983 and died in 1996. Doris continues to live at Sarcoxie.
