Terry S. Long, Jamestown

Terry Long, a native of Boone County, Missouri, was raised on a dairy, grain, and beef farm near Hartsburg. One of his activities was a custom alfalfa hay operation selling under contract to Skygo Farms in Fulton.

Terry served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. His service include two tours aboard a destroyer and he spent 14 months in Vietnam.

Upon leaving the Navy, Terry attended the University of Missouri and obtained a degree in agricultural engineering in 1976. While at the University he met and married his wife Barbara in 1974. She also had a dairy background having grown up on a farm near Brazito. After graduation, Terry joined the Missouri Farmers Association as a farm systems engineer. In five years in his job he moved to many Missouri locations working with many types of facilities and waste handling systems.

In 1982 Terry left MFA and was employed by the Missouri State Milk Board as its manufacturing program manager. In 1992 he became executive secretary of the Milk Board after serving for a brief period as acting secretary.

Terry has been active for 14 years in the Conference for Interstate Milk Shippers and the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture ­ Dairy Division and currently serves as its vice president. He is also past president of the Missouri Milk, Food, and Environmental Health Association and the Missouri Dairy Fieldman and Sanitarian Association.

Terry was executive secretary for the Missouri Butter and Cheese Institute from 1984 to 1992 and, as a Certified Professional Sanitarian, he served on the Board of Certification as its chairman. He is also a member of the Missouri Dairy Hall of Honors Board of Trustees.

In his community, Terry is a member of the Jamestown Baptist Church and is its Sunday School director. He has been a member of the Hartsburg American Legion for 21 years.

Terry and Barbara and two children – Jamie and Nicole – live on and operate a Moniteau County cow-calf farming operation near Jamestown.
